A Preview of the 2016 AAPI YPS-MSRF Winter Medical Conference
AAPI Hour Happy New Year, everyone. I hope 2016 is a happy and healthy one for you all. Speaking of healthy, what better way to kick of 2016 than with your favorite South Asian physicians at the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin’s (AAPI) annual Winter Medical Conference (WMC) at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino in sunny Las Vegas? After all, Oprah did say that we should make 2016 the year of our best health right? Who says that can’t start with a trip to Vegas?!
The 3rd Annual WMC will take place January 15-18, 2016 at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas. The Young Physicians Section (YPS) and Medical Students, Residents & Fellows (MSRF) leadership team behind the event include YPS officers and board members: Drs. Rupak Parikh (President), Kusum Punjabi (Past President), Aaditya Desai (President-Elect), Roshan Shah (Vice-President), Praveen Arla (Treasurer), Smitha Arekapudi (Secretary), Stella Gandhi (Convention Chair), Saya Nagori (Convention Chair), Jay Bhatt (Legislative Chair), Vineet Mishra (Sponsorship Chair), and Sunit Jariwala (Scientific Research and Journal Chair).
The central theme of this year’s conference is Leadership and will feature the following content: Dowling Street (Harvard) Leadership Seminar, Dr. Shoeb Sitafalwalla’s discussion of the prevalence of South Asian cardiovascular events and the Red Sari initiative, Dr. Sajani Shah Kapasi’s discussion of obesity rates among South Asians and surgical intervention, Dr. Suresh Reddy’s discussion of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, and Dr. Jay Bhatt’s discussion of public health and policy and the SAHEB program. There will also be panel discussions on academic research vs. private practice, as well as on the role of law, finance, and technology in the future of medicine.
Evening festivities will be held at Marquee in the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Hakkasan at the MGM Grand.
The WMC was founded in 2013 as a unique forum for the next generation of healthcare leaders to discuss important topics in the rapidly changing healthcare environment. The conference is specifically focused on the Young Physicians Section (YPS) and Medical Student Resident and Fellows (MSRF) section of AAPI.
Past lecture series at the WMC have included: Palliative care (Dr. Balu Natarajan – Chief Medical Officer of Seasons Hospice), technology and social media in healthcare (Salil Gandhi – CEO of HCP Buzz), Pediatric Care (M. Narendra Kini – CEO of Miami’s Children’s Hospital), Public Health Policy and Administration (Dr. Jay Bhatt – Illinois Chief Health Officer) and a leadership discussion by White House Fellow Lt. Commander Dr. Sunny Ramchandani.

The American Association of Physicians of Indian origin (AAPI) was founded in 1984 and is based in Chicago. As the largest ethnic/cultural medical association in the U.S., AAPI provides a forum for its members to celebrate their profession, heritage, and community. AAPI currently serves as the umbrella organization for more than 150 chapter/alumni/specialty associations nationwide. As the second largest physician organization in the nation (next to the American Medical Association) AAPI is one of the most prominent and influential medical associations in the United States with a constituency of 65,000+ physicians and 35,000+ Medical Students, Residents & Fellows (MSRF).

The AAPI-est place on earth
During the weekend of June 19th, 2015, AAPI hosted their 33rd Annual National Convention in Orlando, Florida. The conference featured heavy hitters in the community including:
• Kailash Satyarthi, 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, recognized for his activism in support of children’s rights and education and against child labor. • U.S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Dr. Vivek Murthy • U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara
The event also featured entertainment by Jay Sean, Mystic India, and, Sonu Nigam.
At the Orlando Convention, the following officials were elected to serve as AAPI’s senior leadership for the 2015-2016 term: Dr. Seema Jain (President), Dr. Ajay Lodha (President-Elect), Dr. Gautam Samadder (Vice President), Dr. Naresh Parikh (Secretary), and Dr. Suresh Reddy (Treasurer), Dr. Aravind Pillai (Chairman of the Board of Trustees).
Don’t worry be AAPI
AAPI’s reach extends beyond the United States. Each year, AAPI participates in a Global Healthcare Summit in India. Amitabh Bachchan is among the many luminaries to attend this important summit where ideas and issues are shared across borders to address the future of healthcare.
The most recent Global Healthcare Summit was held from Dec 28th to Jan 2nd at the ITC Moriya in Delhi. The summit featured a joint leadership workshop with AIIMS and included discussions with game changers such as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda, US FDA Country Director Dr. Mathew Thomas, Anshu Prakash Joint Secretary Minister of Health, and Dr. Harsh Vardhan Honorable Minister of for Science and Technology to discuss the next generation of healthcare in terms of trends, issues, advancements, technologies, regulation, and protocols.
The Big AAPI
